Gary Neville knew during the New Year’s Day match against West Brom in 2011, that it was going to be his last and decided to retire the day after. This was also the last season we saw John O’Shea and Wes Brown, who both played numerous games at right-back during their careers, play for United before they both left for Sunderland. It has been over four years since Neville retired but United are still on the search for a commanding and consistent first choice right-back.
The Da Silva twins
The young Brazilians from Fluminense were signed with the intention to be United’s full backs for years to come and were labelled as “Brazil’s answer to the Neville brothers”. Rafael was set to be United’s long-term right back as he was given the number two shirt, previously worn by Gary Neville, and made 40 appearances during Sir Alex’s last season in charge.
But he has seen less action since the arrivals of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal in particular, as he only made 11 appearances this season, the fewest he has made since he’s joined United. Van Gaal has favoured Valencia over Rafael, which has put the Brazilian’s future at Old Trafford in doubt.
The career of Fabio Da Silva has taken a very different path to his twin, as he’s gone from starting in a Champions League final against Barcelona, back in 2011, to playing for Cardiff City in the Championship.
Phil Jones
Paul Scholes believes right-back is Phil Jones’ best position, as he thinks the Englishman isn’t smart enough to play at centre-back for United or his country. Jones responded to his former teammate’s comments saying that “it doesn’t bother me one little bit”, as he’s still set on his favoured centre-back position. In past seasons Jones has often filled in at right-back and may have to once again, if another centre-back is brought into the club this summer.
Antonio Valencia
The Ecuadorian has seen the vast majority of his game time at right-back under van Gaal. Despite being a natural right-midfielder, he hasn’t showed consistent attacking contributions throughout the season. Valencia hasn’t been able to come up with the same level of performances since the 2011/12 season, which saw him win United’s Fans and Player’s Player of the Year awards.
Perhaps it was just a coincidence that he hasn’t reached the same heights when he was given the iconic number seven shirt the following season. He then returned to his previous number, 25, after an indifferent season. His physique and athletic ability often helps him in defensive areas, but has made mistakes that have led to goals, highlighting his unfamiliarity with the position.
Potential Summer Signings?
United have been linked with a number of right-backs prior to the summer transfer window, as van Gaal in on the search for someone who is reliable and long-term. A replacement is undoubtedly needed, and we have identified four potential targets.
