Defender set to extend Old Trafford stay

Phil Jones is set to sign a new contract to extend his stay beyond the end of next season, according to the Daily Mail.

Jones, who joined from Blackburn Rovers for £16 million in 2011, is understood to have agreed terms on a contract similar to the one which Chris Smalling signed at the end of the season.

The contract, reportedly worth £80,000-a-week, will end doubts over whether the 23-year-old would remain at Old Trafford and also confirm that he is a vital part of Louis van Gaal’s plans.

Although the England international can operate at both right back and in central midfield, his natural position appears to be as a central defender. Chris Smalling spoke of his belief that the pair could form a partnership to rival that of their predecessors Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

“I think we (Jones and I) have proven we can fill the gap. It’s one where it just builds over time and we’ve had our chance this season and now it is all about building on that next season”, said Smalling.

Phil Jones has made 128 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 5 goals. He has also represented England on 17 occasions, including at the 2014 World Cup.
