Jesse Lingard rescues victory for England Under-21s

Manchester United academy graduate, Jesse Lingard, was in action for Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21’s side and was subject to much praise from the gaffer after his last gasp goal.

Introduced to the fray after the interval when Alex Pritchard picked up an injury to the ankle on the 55th minute, it was on the 85th minute that the 22-year-old made his mark. In the right place at the right time after Sweden half cleared the Three Lions’ corner, Lingard volleyed on the edge of the area as opponents and teammates alike followed the wondrous strike as it dipped and buried itself within the net just as they were about to return to position with hung heads.

Spurs’ Alex Pritchard sighted leaving Andruv Stadion donning a surgical boot suggests an opening for our winger and Southgate was certainly impressed by the ‘intelligent footballer.’

He went on to say; ‘He’s got very clean feet. He’s sharp coming in from the line, with good movement, and he’s also got a goal in him because he’s a calm finisher.’ (You don’t say).

‘He’s been a player at Manchester United since he was very young but he’s physically a late developer and they’ve had to wait for him, and us. He’s a very quiet unassuming kid and great to work with.’ But Lingard is all but quiet as his late winner with a full time score line of 1-0 has bought headlines with the exciting, young prospect continuing the good form he was in when on loan at Derby County last campaign.
