Red Devils could make Milk Cup return

There was disappointment last month when it was revealed that Manchester United would be withdrawing from the annual Dale Farm Milk Cup. It is a competition which the Red Devils have won 5 times over the years, with legends such as Gary Neville and David Beckham having played in it early in their careers.

Speaking to BBC Sport, chairman of the Milk Cup, Victor Leonard, said:

“There’s no major disagreement with Manchester United”… “There are talks ongoing in the background, they are coming across to the tournament, a number of officials, there will be a meeting in September with the club itself and I can’t say very much.”

The chairman and organisers are reportedly optimistic that the competition’s long-standing relationship with Manchester United will be re-kindled and the Old Trafford club will rejoin the tournament as of next year.

The club pulled out because they felt it would be more appropriate to take young players on their senior pre-season tour of America than have them play in Ireland.

This time last year, Reece James, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard impressed in  the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament on tour with the senior squad, whereas Adnan Januzaj had made the step up in the previous year.

It is likely that players such as Callum Gribbin, Axel Tuanzebe and Sam Johnstone go on tour with the club to play fixtures including those against Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain.
