With preseason just weeks away, players know that they will have to be prepared to give the upcoming friendlies their all in order to impress their manager and buy themselves a place in his starting eleven by the time the real fixtures come around at the start of August; some more than others.
Belgian international and supposed ‘wonderkid’ Adnan Januzaj is one player who has a lot of hard work to on Manchester United’s pre-season tour of America. He made just 18 appearances under Louis van Gaal in 2014/15, with 11 of those coming as a substitute – and no goals or assists provided.
The young midfielder is aware that he needs to do more to stake a claim for a starting spot, and has been talking about the upcoming pre-season game against Barcelona with excitement:
“I think the game against Barcelona will be a good challenge, because they’re a massive team,” he said. “Everyone knows who Barcelona are, and everyone knows Manchester United too, so it will be a great game.”
This seems to be a hint to Louis van Gaal that he wants to play in that pre-season fixture against the current European and La Liga champions – and a good performance against them could do him wonders.
