The signing of Memphis Depay was announced on May 7th and plenty of supporters are relishing the prospect of seeing the Dutch star playing in a United shirt. Here’s five things the fans can look out for from the former PSV Eindhoven forward.
1 Free Kick Specialist
Ryan Giggs believes that Depay can follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham and provide Manchester United with a regular, genuine goalscoring threat from set pieces. Ronaldo and Beckham were superb at free kicks and if the evidence of his time at PSV is anything to go by, Memphis Depay will add another dimension to the United attack.

2 Dribbling Skills
Another reason to get excited about Depay’s arrival, and another similarity with the great Ronaldo, is his stunning dribbling ability. He can move with the ball with electric speed and power, and is especially ruthless when dribbling towards goal.

3 Swagger
When you possess the attacking class and devastating ability that Memphis Depay does, a swagger and confident bravado are bound to come along with it. Like Ronaldo, and all great players before them, their style demands an arrogance. In order to make it to the very top and survive the cauldron of pressure that faces every Manchester United player, arrogance and swagger is a must.
4 Sharpshooter
The comparison between Depay and Cristiano Ronaldo may well be a burden on the Dutchman’s shoulders but one cannot avoid getting the feeling that he will relish the constant link with one of the game’s greatest ever players. Depay can score from any angle or distance, he has the ability but also the courage to try new and audacious things on a football pitch, a rare and precious commodity. For that, United fans have every reason to be excited.
5 Style off the pitch
Depay carries his confident persona off the pitch with him. He befits the typical modern day footballer with his tattoos and interest in fashion but he has also dabbled in the music industry, gaining accomplishment as a rapper back in Holland. At one point his coach, Fred Rutten, doubted his commitment to football because of his musical ambitions. Thankfully, he has found a perfect balance between his passions. Unless you’re Dutch, it will be difficult to understand his raps, but Depay sounds pretty impressive!
