Manchester United’s willingness to sell Harry Amass for around £6m suddenly looks like a considerably bigger gamble after Michael Carrick’s final pre-season test exposed the problems on the left side of his squad.
United have spent much of the summer searching for another left-back, yet Amass could still be allowed to leave Old Trafford permanently before the transfer window closes.
The Athletic previously reported that United were prepared to sell the 19-year-old for approximately £6m, while more recent reporting suggests a permanent departure remains more likely than another straightforward loan.
That decision deserves another look after what happened against AC Milan.
Harry Amass decision becomes harder for Man Utd
Luke Shaw started United’s final friendly but endured a difficult evening as Milan repeatedly created danger down his side during their 4-2 victory.
Fresh analysis following the match highlighted how Samuel Chukwueze caused United significant problems from that flank, while Carrick is already known to want another option at left-back.
ReadManUtd’s player ratings against AC Milan gave Shaw a 5/10 after United struggled when Milan overloaded his side.
That does not mean the 31-year-old should suddenly lose his position after one poor friendly.
It does underline the risk of entering a Champions League season without reliable competition behind him.
Amass would provide exactly that depth if United cannot complete another signing.
Patrick Dorgu creates another problem for Carrick
Patrick Dorgu theoretically offers Carrick another option at left-back, but his development further forward makes the situation more complicated.
The Denmark international was ReadManUtd’s standout performer against Milan, scoring United’s second goal and repeatedly causing problems with his pace and pressing.
Dorgu has previously admitted he enjoys playing further forward because the role allows him to make greater use of his speed and physical qualities. Simon Stone also noted that Carrick’s switch to a conventional back four exposed some of Dorgu’s defensive limitations and could influence United’s recruitment.
Moving Dorgu backwards simply because United have sold Amass could therefore solve one problem while weakening another area of the team.
ReadManUtd has already highlighted the transfer warning sent to INEOS by the Milan defeat. Left-back remains one of the unresolved positions Carrick wants strengthened before the window shuts.
Man Utd should sequence Harry Amass exit carefully
Amass still needs regular senior football, and United may ultimately decide that selling him is best for both parties.
The issue is timing.
Selling a young natural left-back for around £6m before Carrick has secured his replacement would leave United unnecessarily exposed.
Shaw would carry substantial responsibility, while using Dorgu as emergency cover could remove one of Carrick’s most dangerous attacking options.
United do not necessarily need to abandon their Amass plan.
But after Milan exposed the left side just seven days before the Premier League season begins, completing his exit before completing their own left-back business would now represent a considerable gamble.
