Marcos Rojo believes that his Argentina and Manchester United teammate Angel Di Maria will justify his British record transfer fee next season and that he should be held in the same regard as Lionel Messi.
The defender told the Mirror that his compatriot will prove his worth next term. “People forget Di Maria last season was adapting to a new league,” said Rojo, “they just saw a big transfer fee, and maybe didn’t think about England being very different from Spain – it’s a lot more physical.
“He’s one of the best in the world and on his day can do things like Messi and Ronaldo, that’s the level he’s on.
“I’m sure this coming season we will see very special things from him.”
Di Maria’s debut campaign in English football started brightly with goals against Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City but he faded during the second half of the season, eventually falling out of favour with Louis van Gaal.
But the £59.7 million man has looked a rejuvenated figure during the Copa America tournament, scoring twice in the 6-1 semi-final destruction of Paraguay, inspiring Argentina to the final.
Di Maria made 32 appearances in his first season at United and found the net four times.
You can see whether Di Maria and Rojo can guide Argentina to the Copa America title on Saturday, when they take on the hosts Chile.
