2014/15 – Top 5 moments

The 2014/15 season had its ups and downs, but Louis Van Gaal managed to take Manchester United back into the UEFA Champions League. The season got off to a difficult start, fans expected great things from Louis Van Gaal in his first year, however, the top four was the main goal, but along the way, what memorable moments were there in the first season of Louis Van Gaal. Well, here, we take a look at the top 5 moments of the 2014/15 campaign.

5. Marouane Fellaini’s goal vs West Brom back in October. This goal, which was an absolute cracker, changed Fellaini’s United career for the better! It looked as if the Belgian would be on his way out of the club, and his chances on the field looked rather limited. But, his goal against West Brom stunned everyone, not just United fans, this year he proved his quality and he really progressed after this Monday night at the Hawthorns. Fellaini went on to play a vital role in United’s race for top 4 scoring some crucial goals, including goals against Spurs and Man City.

4. The Champions League is back. After a long season without midweek football, Van Gaal took United back into Europe. At times it didn’t look like it was going to happen, and pressure began to mount especially with the difficult set of fixtures ahead. But the crucial wins against Spurs, Liverpool and City secured a crucial 9 points in the race for Europe! For many United fans getting back into the top 4 was the main goal, and Van Gaal certainly achieved this. It is what he promised in his first year and he had met the expectations so far.

3. van Gaal’s speech at the Player of the Year awards. The season was almost complete, and after David De Gea took the two main awards that evening, Louis Van Gaal still managed to steal the show! His dramatic drunk speech really ended the season in style. Top 4 had been secured and a deal for Memphis Depay had been agreed, and this speech really had everyone talking.

2. David De Gea had a fantastic season for United and individually secured 4th for United. Most of the time United’s fans had their hearts in the mouths as the defence continually had to rely on the Spanish stopper. But against Everton, the Spaniard really stood out. His 3 saves, from Baines, Osman and Oviedo won United the 3 points that day against Everton. And it gave us an early teaser as to what was to come from De Gea for the rest of the season.

1. The top moment of the 2014/15 season for United was the victory over Liverpool at Anfield. It was March and Liverpool hadn’t lost since December when we defeated them 3-0. This victory at Anfield really played a crucial part in securing 4th place for United. Juan Mata’s brace, including the clubs goal of the season with the bicycle kick, ensured United’s first victory at Anfield since 2012. The day also saw Steven Gerrard come on as a sub at half-time and last only 33 seconds as he was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera.  This 2-1 victory would be seen as United’s most important in this campaign.
