Both Memphis Depay and Louis van Gaal – who have reconciled at Old Trafford – had their say on United’s sole signing so far today at the players unveiling. The 21-year-old and fans alike were overwhelmed, Depay due to the similarities to Cristiano Ronaldo bestowed upon him – to which he responded in a modest manner, admiringly refusing to allow gossip to define him, instead claiming he will let his ‘quality on the pitch’ do the talking. The Red Devils faithful, on the other hand, were slightly taken aback to hear the gaffer say he might deploy the former PSV man as a number nine.
However, they weren’t surprised to hear Memphis hail them as ‘the biggest club in the world’ and have them falling at his feet when he opened up that it’s a ‘dream come true’ for him. The confidence exuded when indicating his belief that United can claim ‘a title’ and ‘all the trophies’ also please those that house the Stretford End on a Saturday afternoon.
Our gaffer also reiterated his self-belief but suggests the step from the Dutch to the English top flight will be ‘not easy’ and that he has acknowledged this, insisting the Reds will have to bear with their summer singing and ‘give him time.’ The pair recognised the physicality of the Premier League, Depay observing that it ‘moves fast and everyone is so strong.’
Although he will likely be losing his fellow Dutchman, Robin van Persie, the remaining squad members have helped him settle. The Holland International told how ‘everyone is so nice,’ easing him into life at the Theatre of Dreams, an appropriate title for Old Trafford, given Depay’s earlier claims that playing for the club has merely been a fantasy of his.
Finally, his views on getting started in Manchester reflected the supporters as he inevitably shared with the press present that he is ‘excited’ for his latest challenge as are we to see him in action.
