Sam Johnstone has featured in both of Manchester United’s pre-season friendlies so far, and will be holding talks with manager Louis van Gaal to talk about their plans for the upcoming season.
The 22-year-old could return to hometown club Preston North End, where he helped the Lilywhites achieve promotion from to the Championship last season, during a short loan spell. The English goalkeeper wants to continue his career at Old Trafford, but will soon find out what is expected of him this season.
He told the PA; “If I go back out, I would like it to be a loan. I have to see what happens here first. The manager here gives kids opportunities. I have been at this club since I was 10 years old so you have to look at it, speak to the right people and see what the club want from me.”
“If they tell me it is time to move on then it is time to move on, but I will keep working hard here and impressing the manager.”
Johnstone is yet to play for United’s first-team in a competitive match, as he has gained experience from loan spells at five different clubs; Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster and Preston.
Despite putting in good displays so far this pre-season, its unlikely Johnstone will see much competition game-time with United. Victor Valdes is set to leave the Red Devils, but Johnstone will also be competing with Anders Lindegaard, and potentially Sergio Romero, who has been heavily linked with a free transfer to Old Trafford, for the number two spot.
