Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero is set to sign for Manchester United, according to reports on ESPN FC
The 28-year-old is a free agent after leaving Italian side Sampdoria at the end of his contract. He is seen as a replacement for Victor Valdes, the Spanish goalkeeper having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford as a result of his refusal to appear in the Under-21 squad.
Romero, who was also a part of the Argentina squad that finished as runners-up at the 2014 World Cup, is reportedly flying out to California to watch tomorrow night’s pre-season clash with Barcelona.
His arrival at United will be the second time that Romero will get the chance to work with manager Louis van Gaal. He was a part of van Gaal’s title-winning side at AZ Alkmaar in 2008/09.
Romero left AZ in 2011, joining Sampdoria and helping them to win promotion back to Serie A in 2012. He spent a season on loan at AS Monaco, in 2013/14, but failed to usurp first choice goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.
Keep a look out for confirmation of the transfer over the coming days and perhaps a sighting in the crowd during the match against Barcelona.
