Man United vs Barcelona – Player Ratings

David De Gea – 8

The Spaniard capped his first tour appearance with a typically assured display. He made one save of particular note, denying Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto when the youngster was put through on goal. De Gea again showed us what a vital asset he is to the club and we can only hope that he decides to stay.

Matteo Darmian- 8

Darmian produced a solid display at right back. The Italian has settled quickly into the team and was as efficient going forward, producing some brilliant crosses, as he was in his defensive work. On this evidence, the £13 million United paid for his services looks an absolute bargain.

Phil Jones- 6

Jones was solid if unspectacular in the centre of defence. Along with Daley Blind he kept Luis Suarez fairly quiet and will be happy enough with his contribution.

Daley Blind- 7

Blind’s selection in the heart of defence caused quite a stir on social media, many doubting his suitability to the role. However he turned in an encouraging display, making some important interceptions and looking generally composed at the back.

Luke Shaw- 7

Luke Shaw was quietly efficient during his sixty minutes on the pitch. The young defender linked up well with Ashley Young on the left hand side and was diligent in his defensive work.

Michael Carrick- 8

Carrick proved his worth with a typical performance of understated intelligence and calmness. His reading of the game is superb and he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. What a crucial player he is to the team.

Morgan Schneiderlin- 7

Whilst he won’t grab any headlines with his showing tonight, Schneiderlin contributed to United’s general dominance of the game alongside Michael Carrick. He was a constant physical presence on the pitch and like his midfield partner, he was effective in breaking up Barcelona’s attacks.

Juan Mata- 7

Mata started out wide but continually drifted into the centre and ghosted around the pitch throughout the first half. The Spanish international displayed some wonderful close control and played a tremendous cross field pass to Ashley Young in that first period.

Ashley Young- 8

Ashley Young once again showed what a rejuvenated character he has become in recent months with another encouraging display on the left wing. Working well with Luke Shaw, he looked dangerous and frightened the Barcelona defence with his speed. Delivered a brilliant cross for Wayne Rooney’s opening goal.

Memphis Depay- 8

Memphis started just behind Wayne Rooney once more and the signs of a fruitful partnership are starting to show. The summer signing showed some neat touches, great pace and came close to scoring with a good effort in the first half. Looking like a quality addition to the team.

Wayne Rooney- 8

Rooney will be delighted to get off the mark in pre-season and produce his best display on the tour yet. He could have scored in the opening moments but was denied before he headed home after just seven minutes had gone. His movement to lose his marker was impressive and Rooney led the line, causing the Barcelona defence plenty of problems.

Louis van Gaal gave the starting eleven the opening sixty minutes before changing the whole side. Sam Johnstone made a good save from Rakitic but was powerless to stop Rafinha’s volley. Jesse Lingard was excellent again, smartly finishing off a move involving fellow substitutes James Wilson and Tyler Blackett. Adnan Januzaj was the standout substitute, giving a really promising display as a centre forward, capping his performance with a wonderful goal straight after Barcelona had pulled a goal back.
