Man Utd confirm Romero signing

Manchester United have officially unveiled their fifth signing of the summer Argentina international Sergio Romero on a free transfer. The 28-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal, with an option for a one-year extension.

Romero – who spent last season on loan at AS Monaco – has worked under Louis van Gaal during his time at AZ Alkmaar, which is one of the main reasons why the Argentine chose to join the Red Devils.

He becomes Van Gaal’s fifth signing of the summer, succeeding the arrivals of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Romero was watched by scouts from a number of clubs, including Liverpool, last season.

Upon signing for the Red Devils, Romero told the club’s official website: “I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me.

“Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”

Van Gaal also had this to say about his new signing: “Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper. He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United.

“He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again.”

The Argentine’s arrival has fuelled speculation linking David De Gea with a move to Real Madrid this summer and Van Gaal has refused to rule out an exit for the Spaniard.

He told the official website: “I know him [Romero] very well and I think in our situation, if De Gea is going or not going, it is always a threat and we have to take care, make sure that we are prepared and that is why I think it is very good that Sergio Romero is now a Manchester United player.”
