van Gaal opens exit door for De Gea

Louis van Gaal’s patience with David de Gea has been tested – and cracked.

According to The Guardian, the often ruthless Dutch mastermind has instructed the Manchester United hierarchy to sell his Spanish number one and end the constant “will he, won’t he go?” talk.

Speaking after United’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the International Champions Cup, van Gaal said of the goalkeeper:

“We have a situation that is not favourable for David De Gea but neither for us and neither for the club [Madrid] that maybe he wants to go.”

He then commented on a mistake which De Gea made in the first half of the game, which should have seen PSG go 1-0 up but for a woeful strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic

“Everybody can make mistakes but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is mostly a goal and that’s the difference.”

These comments were already a signal that his patience with the player was already reaching its limits – but De Gea’s attitude in not clearing up his situation seems to have pushed his manager over the edge.

Under van Gaal’s instruction, Woodward and the rest of the United board have been playing hardball with the transfer, insisting that Sergio Ramos change allegiances before de Gea’s wish to return to Spain is granted.

Now The Guardian’s report suggests that the Dutchman has instructed the powers that be to be more lenient and let de Gea go if the appropriate offer comes in; this is because he wants his squad settled and finalised before the game against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

Sergio Romero came in on a free transfer last week and Victor Valdes is yet to be sold – with Anders Lindegaard still available as back-up once he recovers from injury, so the club are in a good position to carry on without David de Gea.
