Bastian Schweinsteiger has been awarded the number 31 jersey for Manchester United this season after the shirt was photographed in the home dressing room on the stadium tour this week, despite the number previously belonging to Marouane Fellaini.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder and current Germany captain, who turned 31 earlier this week, has been given the same number that he wore for Die Bayern despite having worn number 23 for the duration of the pre-season tour in the United States.
Despite rumours circulating that a number of squad numbers were expected to be changed it is now believed that only Fellaini has had to change his first team number, with the Belgian international now expected to take the number 26 jersey. And after announcing prior to the release of the new Adidas kit Manchester United stated that the re-release of the squad numbers would only happen shortly before the start of the new season.
It is believed that Manchester United have decided to wait before announcing their squad numbers as they attempted to finalise a number of arrivals and departures, including the transfer of Rafael to Olympique Lyonnais for £2.1million that has opened up the number two jersey for Matteo Darmian to wear this season.
And with Angel Di Maria set to sign for Paris Saint-Germain after being photographed in Qatar ahead of his proposed medical, it is now expected that Memphis Depay will be the new holder of the number seven jersey – after previously wearing number 9 in pre-season.
