Manchester United will not sign Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia CF this summer, say Sky Sports.
Arguably the most-trusted transfer news source in the UK, the broadcasting giants have revealed that according to their sources, Manchester United have no interest – and never did – in signing the Argentinian defender.
Rumours have circulated all summer that both Otamendi and Sergio Ramos are United’s top defensive transfer targets, but Sky Sports claim that there has never been any intention from the Old Trafford hierarchy to even bid for last year’s World Cup finalist.
If neither Ramos nor Otamendi come in, and other defensive targets have not been identified, United will spend at least until January with 7 central defensive options in their squad, assuming none of them leave this month.
These are Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett – with Michael Carrick also capable of filling the role if it comes down to it.
The Red Devils should definitely, injury permitting, challenge with that defense, as Rojo is a regular for Argentina just as Smalling and Jones are for England – the quality is there, it’s just consistency that the side seem to lack.
