Champions League football returned to Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, after a season of rather boring absence. The stage was set for United to thrust themselves into the group stage and it’s a chance they didn’t hesitate to take.
Despite an unfortunate early own goal from Michael Carrick, the Red Devils were bullish in attack, driven by a determined Memphis. A sublime assist from Carrick saw the Dutchman provide the equaliser before stealing the headlines with a beauty of a strike to make it 2-1 to United before half-time.
Memphis should have bagged a hat-trick at various points in the second half but still had a wonderful game. He topped off his best United performance to date by providing a sumptuous for Marouane Fellaini to head in with the last touch of the game to give United a two-goal lead to take into the second leg.
Chris Smalling and Daley Blind impressed once again at centre-back as United shut down attacks all over the place for the third game running – something which would be welcomed for the rest of the season.
