Chicharito completes United exit

Manchester United have confirmed the sale of Mexican striker Javier Hernández on their official club website.

The 27-year old Mexican international joins Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of £8.75 million, and Bayer have confirmed that Hernández has signed a three-year contract with the club on their own website.

Hernández joined United in the summer of 2010 from Mexican side Guadalajara for an undisclosed fee, in the process becoming the first Mexican player to ever play for the Reds. He made his competitive debut against Chelsea in the Community Shield in August, scoring after coming on as a substitute early in the second half.

In total, Hernández made 157 appearances for United, scoring 59 goals. Most of those goals came off the bench, as the Mexican would often come on as an impact substitute and deliver crucial goals in the final years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s long managerial tenure at Old Trafford.

However, once Louis van Gaal took charge after the sacking of David Moyes, it always seemed that Chicharito’s days at United were numbered. He was sent out on loan to Real Madrid in the Dutchman’s first season in charge, and despite regaining some of his form in the Spanish capital, he was never really going to figure in the manager’s plans this season.

Hernández was still given a couple of appearances off the bench at the start of this season, but failed to impress van Gaal, most notably missing a penalty and a sitter against Club Brugge in the second leg of the Champions League play-off.

Despite the lows in the past couple of years, Hernández will be remembered fondly by United fans for all the crucial goals that he scored in the big moments and having a huge hand in United pulling away from Liverpool in total Premier League titles won.
