It appears Manchester United fans have a lot to thank, former United captain and current Hull City manager, Steve Bruce for. Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson on the back of advice given by Steve Bruce… Whilst in the bath together…
The charismatic forward went on to become a true United great. The Frenchman’s five seasons at the club brought a rather handsome return, with four Premier League titles and two FA Cup medals, scoring 96 times in 220 games. However Cantona’s career at United was overshadowed by the infamous kung fu kick incident at Selhurst Park.
Ferguson recounts the decision in his new book ‘Leading’, when unusually he got in the bath tub with a couple his players, Bruce and Gary Pallister, after a game against Leeds in 1992. What the two defender had to say on the then Leeds man, made up Ferguson’s mind as Joe.co.uk reports.
The excerpt reads: “After a game against Leeds United in 1992, I was in the bath with the players, which was highly unusual for me.
“Listening to their analysis of the match, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister were raving about Eric Cantona, the French striker Leeds had signed from Nimes.
“Steve Bruce was particularly complimentary about Cantona’s abilities and somehow those comments planted a seed, which soon after led to us signing Eric and we all know how that turned out.
“Listening, even just for a few moments, led to a decision which changed the landscape of Manchester United.”
Perhaps manager Louis van Gaal will be hopping in the bath with the current crop of players upon hearing this news.
