Manchester United’s squad for the UEFA Youth League has been confirmed, as they prepare for their first two fixtures this season.
The Reds have qualified for the tournament courtesy of the first-team’s involvement in the Champions League, and Nicky Butt’s team will hope they can progress into the latter stages of the tournament. The youngsters will have the same opponents as the first-team in the group stage of the Youth League,
A 28-man squad has been submitted to UEFA, with Devonte Redmond, Matty Willock and Scott McTominay being the three over-age players (born in 1996) registered. Willock is the only member of the squad that has experience of playing in the Youth League, having made an appearance of the bench in United’s 4-3 win over Bayer Leverkusen in 2013.
In that campaign, United’s only one in the Youth League so far, United were knocked out at the group stage in a group containing Leverkusen, Real Sociedad and Shakhtar Donetsk. United’s squad back then contained the likes of James Wilson and Andreas Pereira, both now on the fringes of the first-team, so good performances in this tournament could impress Louis van Gaal and provide a pathway to future opportunities with the first-team.
United kick off their Youth League campaign with an away trip to the Netherlands to face PSV on Tuesday (14:00 BST) and their first home game will take place at Leigh Sports Village against Wolfsburg two weeks later (time to be confirmed).
