Moreno apologises for Shaw injury

PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno has apologised for the tackle that caused Luke Shaw’s broken leg during last night Champions League’s clash between Manchester United and the Dutch champions.

The incident happened in the fourteenth minute of the game, when Shaw made a brilliant run into the penalty area but was scythed down by a reckless challenge from Moreno. United confirmed after the Reds’ 2-1 defeat that Shaw had fractured his leg in two places, and would be out for several months and potentially the rest of the season, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

Moreno went on to score PSV’s equaliser and was named man of the match by UEFA despite injuring Shaw, which would have rubbed salt into the wounds of many United fans worldwide, but the Mexican apologised after the game for Shaw’s injury.

Speaking to Dutch paper De Telegraaf, the 27-year old said: “I’m really, really sorry. I hope it’s not too bad, but I fear it’s like I did. I went for the ball and didn’t want to hurt him.”

“I have also experienced this myself at the World Cup [Moreno broke his leg attempting a tackle] and know how hard it is and how difficult it is to accept it. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. I wish him and his family good luck.”

PSV manager Phillip Cocu echoed Moreno’s sentiments. In the post-match press conference, he said: “We are all sorry about Shaw’s injury. Hector is a player who went for the ball and was not out to injure anyone but it didn’t look good.”

I’m sure that many United fans will agree with me that Moreno did not intentionally set out to injure Shaw. However, the tackle was certainly reckless and he should have been sent off. The real loser in all of this however is Shaw, because he was looking in fine form and finally establishing himself as a first-teamer at Old Trafford before receiving this horrific injury.
