Arguably one of football’s most famous names, David Beckham is a global phenomenon, transcending the world of sport and showbiz entertainment today. Once upon a time, however, he was just a regular guy, playing for his beloved Manchester United.
23 years ago today, Beckham made his debut for the Reds in a League Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion, coming on as a 72nd-minute substitute for Andrei Kanchelskis. Over the next 12 years at Old Trafford, Becks would win six Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups and a Champions League, also going on to captain England while mesmerising fans with his superb crossing ability and trademark free-kicks on a weekly basis.
After leaving United after a fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham went on to further success, winning titles in Spain, America and France with Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain. He will always be remembered as a true great of the game.
To celebrate his time with the Reds, we have compiled the best quotes from some of the most highly respected figures in the game.
