Barcelona forward Neymar has confirmed reports that Manchester United tried to sign the striker in the summer.
In an interview with ESPN Brazil, he confirmed:
We had conversations, but there was nothing concrete. I heard that there were offers, but none were made to me.
It was widely believed that United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew to Barcelona in August to complete a deal for Spanish forward Pedro.
However, Neymar’s comments have revealed that Woodward and United had launched an audacious bid to sign the 23-year-old Brazilian forward.
Neymar joined Barcelona in 2013 from Santos for a reported fee of €57 million. He was a key figure in Barcelona’s title winning season last year scoring 22 goals in 33 appearance.
He wants to continue making an impact in Europe and La Liga, he said:
I want to keep giving my all and evolve season to season. I hope I will be on the Ballon d’Or podium this year.
Reports following Neymar’s transfer in 2013 suggest that his contract buyout clause is set at €190 million.
