“United’s winner was s***” – Wolfsburg boss

Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking was a frustrated man last night, as his side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Daniel Caligiuri had given Die Wölfe the early lead after some woeful defending from the United defence, but Juan Mata’s penalty and Chris Smalling’s early second-half goal gave the Reds all three points.

Hecking’s frustration showed in his post-match press conference, where he labelled Smalling’s winner as a ‘s***’ goal, per the Independent.

“We started well and surprised United early on. The equaliser was a penalty and again, the second goal was unlucky – as we say in German ‘a s*** goal’,” Hecking said.

I’m sure that Hecking was clearly frustrated by his side’s inability to get something from the game, but labelling Smalling’s goal as ‘s***’ was unwarranted. Juan Mata’s assist for the goal was something special – a marvellous back heel flick over the top of the Wolfsburg defence and Smalling’s finish was an impressive one for a defender.

As it stands, United’s group is wide open, with all four teams level on points. The Reds are currently second behind PSV Eindhoven on head-to-head, with the Dutch champions having beaten United on matchday one. Wolfsburg are third and CSKA Moscow are bottom, due to being beaten by the German side on matchday one.
