James: “de Gea should be dropped”

David James has made the ridiculous claim that David de Gea should be dropped for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal tomorrow.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City stopper made the claim on the Premier League’s Football Today programme and believes that Sergio Romero would be a more commanding presence behind the United defence.

“When he [de Gea] does play, they do let in quite a few goals,” he said. “Romero starts the season and he gets three clean sheets, and we’ve been questioning why he isn’t playing. Then he [de Gea] comes back in and keeps another clean sheet.”

I think he makes some wonderful saves and he is very athletic, but the bigger picture of the goalkeeping art, he doesn’t help as much as Romero can.

James then goes on to say that Real Madrid never actually wanted to sign the Spaniard, without any substantial evidence. “It’s interesting that he didn’t go to Madrid or Madrid weren’t that eager on buying him with [Keylor] Navas in goal for them, who’s having a stellar season.”

James’ assertion that de Gea is a worse goalkeeper than Romero is absolute nonsense. de Gea perhaps single-handedly led United into a Champions League place last season, while the last time we saw Romero play for the Reds, he was culpable for both Swansea goals in a 2-1 defeat for United at the end of August.

The former England goalkeeper was nicknamed Calamity James for the numerous goalkeeping blunders he had during his playing days, and he’s certainly dropped another clanger with these comments.
