Schweinsteiger injured on international duty

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will miss Germany’s final Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia on Sunday, after suffering a thigh injury.

The German captain missed his side’s 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland last night, having suffering the injury in the World Cup winners’ pre-match warm-up before the game in Dublin, making him a doubt for United’s next game against Everton next Saturday.

“Schweinsteiger probably won’t play on Sunday,” coach Joachim Löw said after yesterday’s loss. “The medical staff said he has to take a break for two or three days. He will stay with us and we will see, what is possible. But it does not look like he can play. [Mario] Götze certainly won’t play.”

The Reds will hope Schweinsteiger’s injury is not too serious, with the midfield general quickly becoming a vital cog in the side. He has played all 13 games for United this season, and also played in Germany’s two European qualifiers against Poland and Scotland last month.

The 31-year old is the third United player to pick up an injury on international duty, with England captain Wayne Rooney unlikely to play a part in their final two qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania after picking up an ankle injury, while Michael Carrick was rested for England’s final training session after feeling tightness in his groin, although Roy Hodgson was confident the midfielder will play a part against Estonia tonight.
