Manchester United’s Juan Mata is certainly a popular figure with fans, and he may have endeared himself further with his latest comments.
In an interview with Spanish paper El País, the midfielder has said that he loves living in the city of Manchester, and all the cultural aspects that the city has to offer.
“The best thing about living in Manchester is that it has a very ‘British’ atmosphere, very English,” he said.
“And then there is the music – a lot of really big groups have come out of Manchester. As for the architecture, it’s a very English city.
“There are galleries, museums, good restaurants – The only downside is the weather. I adapted really well because I had already lived in London. Now I’ve spent five years in England and it’s gone really quickly.”
It’s easy to forget that Mata spent the best part of three years in London after joining Chelsea from Valencia in 2011, and despite enjoying his time in the capital, the 27-year old says that he feels more at home in Manchester.
“It only seems like yesterday when I was in Valencia. I’m really happy with how it’s all turned out. London is fantastic – it’s like various cities in one but it moves so quickly – at a thousand miles an hour, it’s a bit crazy. Manchester is more laid back, it’s a normal city,” he said.
Mata was also asked if he would like to return to Spain in the interview, and his response will please most United fans.
“Not right now, that’s something which I’m not planning. I miss my family, my friends but right now I am very happy in Manchester. I have the feeling that I have only just arrived and I’ve got a lot of things I want to do.”
The Spanish international has established himself as a key figure in Louis van Gaal’s side, featuring in every United game so far this season, and it seems as if he’ll be sticking around for a while, judging by those final words.
