Loan spell cut short for United midfielder

Manchester United midfielder Joe Rothwell has been recalled from his loan spell at League One side Barnsley.

The 20-year old has been suffering from tonsillitis, and as a result, has returned to Carrington for treatment, as per the official Manchester United website.

Barnsley have also thanked Rothwell for his services and wished him a speedy recovery from tonsillitis on their club website.

Rothwell joined the Tykes on in July on a six-month loan deal alongside team-mate Ben Pearson, and made six appearances at Oakwell, including three as a starter, but has been an unused substitute in recent weeks as he battles the illness.

The England under-20 international, who joined the United academy at the age of six, had a difficult loan spell with Blackpool last season, making just three appearances for the Tangerines before having his loan cut short by the troubled club. This latest setback will be a disappointment for Rothwell, who has been tipped for big things.

However, the Reds have confirmed that Pearson will remain at Oakwell, where he has become a vital part of Lee Johnson’s side. The 20-year old, who also impressed in a loan spell with the Tykes last season, has started every league game this season, as well as featuring in Capital One Cup clashes with Scunthorpe United and Everton.
