Man United winger picks up foot injury

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia is set to be out for a short period of time, after picking up a foot injury against Manchester City.

The former Wigan player, who has spent the most recent part of his United career as an unorthodox right back, started in the Manchester Derby ahead of new signing Matteo Darmian.

The Ecuadorian winger had a good game, but an injury picked up in the first half halted his progress and despite continuing, he eventually had to give way to Darmian late on in the second half.

The Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal confirmed to the club’s in-house channel MUTV, that the 30-year-old was taken off with injury.

According to Soccer Lens, van Gaal said:

[Valencia] had a kick on his foot in the first half and then I let Darmian warm up on the touchline. But then he played further. However, at the end, he could not continue.

Valencia has found form hard to come by in recent times and has found himself largely on the substitutes bench this season.

Man United face a tricky League Cup fourth round tie against Middlesbrough on Wednesday, with Valencia likely to be out injured, allowing Darmian to regain his place in the side.
