Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been handed a three-man ban by the FA for a clash during last week’s Premier League draw with West Ham.
The German midfielder was seen on camera elbowing Hammers defender Winston Reid and retrospective action was taken after referee Mark Clattenburg and his assistants confirmed that he didn’t see the incident.
The FA statement said:
Bastian Schweinsteiger will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after he accepted an FA charge for violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.
The Manchester United midfielder was involved in an incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid in the 40th minute of the game on Saturday 5 December 2015.
This adds to Louis van Gaal’s problems, with United having been knocked out the Champions League on Tuesday night. Schweinsteiger will be suspended for United’s games against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke.
And this leaves van Gaal with only two senior midfielders to choose from, namely Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini. Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera are doubts to return on Saturday and the Dutchman will hope that they recover quickly from their injuries.
