Louis van Gaal hopes that Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Swansea at Old Trafford today will be a ‘starting point’ for the Reds’ season.
Goals from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney sealed all three points for United, with Gylfi Sigurdsson equalising for the Swans in between.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for United however and Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski could have easily stolen a point for his side, heading narrowly wide with the final kick of the game.

The win ends an eight-match winless run for the Reds and moves them into fifth in the Premier League, two points off a top four spot ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Everton tomorrow.
Van Gaal, who has come under fire recently for United’s poor form, also hoped that the side would carry their performance into next week’s FA Cup tie against Sheffield United.
Speaking to the BBC in his post-match interview, the United manager said:
I think we played a very risky system against Swansea because they had a shape with four midfielders in a diamond.
We played with three defenders but we did very well and created a lot of chances. We didn’t score, though, and that’s our problem. When we scored, there was not a problem anymore. We scored two beautiful goals.

I am very happy for the players because they had to play under big pressure and now we have won. We are still near the top of the league and the gap is less. So that’s football. That’s a season.
A season takes eight months or something like that and not one month.
I hope that this is a fantastic starting point for us in the New Year and we can continue against Sheffield United.
