Hernandez admits to United shortcomings

Javier Hernandez has admitted that his upturn in form following his move to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer can be accredited to starting games rather than trying to make an impact off the bench.

The Mexican star striker has already managed 19 goals this season in all competitions and his superb form has left many Manchester United fans questioning Louis Van Gaal’s decision to allow him to leave the club.

Following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, Chicharito struggled to establish himself under David Moyes and Van Gaal and after a failed loan move to Real Madrid last season, the 27-year-old was finally deemed surplus to requirements by the Red Devils’ backroom staff.

However, speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, Hernandez is pleased to be back on the pitch and believes that his manager’s faith in picking him has paid off as he has so far helped guide Leverkusen to fifth in the league:

What I was missing in the last two or three years, it was like I was playing sometimes and then returning to the bench. But now that I am playing most of the game or almost all of my games here in my club, that’s what I need — the rhythm, that confidence.

Because people sometimes think the confidence is with goals, but I don’t think like that. I think confidence is to play day-by-day, to get rhythm.

Hernandez is currently in Orlando along with the rest of the Leverkusen squad as they prepare to participate in the Florida Cup during the Bundesliga’s winter break.
