Rooney – Difficult to qualify for Champions League now

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that it will be difficult for the Red Devils to qualify for the Champions League after today’s defeat against Sunderland.

Lamine Kone’s header eight minutes from the end secured all three points for the Black Cats after Anthony Martial had cancelled out Wahbi Khazri free-kick in the first-half.

The defeat leaves United six points adrift of Manchester City in fourth, with the teams (City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Leicester City) in the top four still to play each other on Sunday.

A downtrodden Rooney spoke to BT Sport after the defeat, and admitted that there would be a mountain to climb if United wanted to finish in the top four:

It’ll be difficult to qualify for the Champions League now and we know that. It’s a sad day for us.

Rooney also admitted that United’s performance was not good enough and failed to create enough chances to win the game:

We didn’t create enough chances and weren’t aggressive enough. It has cost us. We didn’t play well today and we know that. It’s not good enough.

United’s focus will now turn to the Europa League, with a trip to Denmark to face Midtjylland in the first leg of their round of 32 tie on Thursday. That has now turned into a must-win game if the Red Devils want to secure a place in the Champions League next season.
