Four Things We Learned: Man United 1-1 Liverpool

Manchester United’s European campaign is over for this season, after the Reds drew 1-1 in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Old Trafford was a cauldron of noise for the first 44 minutes, as the Theatre of Dreams roared United on for an unlikely comeback. And it seemed that it could happen after Anthony Martial slotted home a penalty half an hour in.

But just as United had some hope, it was swiftly killed off by Jürgen Klopp’s men with the final kick of the first-half. Philippe Coutinho burst past Guillermo Varela on the left wing before dinking the ball over David de Gea, giving Liverpool the precious away goal they wanted to secure their place in the quarter-final.

The second half was a non-event, as both teams played out the last 45 minutes with no intent to score. United had a couple of chances, but they were never going to score the three goals needed to advance.
