After a six-minute capitulation earlier in the week against Tottenham, Manchester United returned to North London in an attempt to secure a place at Wembley for the FA Cup Semi-Final.
United seized early control of the match and did well to nullify West Ham’s threat and the best chance of a relatively quiet first-half fell to Jesse Lingard which forced West Ham ‘keeper Randolph into an impressive reflex save.
The second half had much more a ‘cup feel’ to it. After impressive ball retention and control of the game, the scoring was opened by United via a world-class finish by teenager Marcus Rashford, which was added to ten minutes later by a goal from Marouane Fellaini, which can only be described as chaotic.
It was only the last ten minutes in which United were put under siege and an Antonio flick from a corner was superbly thwarted by David de Gea. His heroics were short lived as from the resulting corner a knock down from Andy Carroll was bravely met by Tomkins to put West Ham back in it.
Although West Ham had a goal rightfully disallowed for offside United ended the game defensively stern to book themselves a trip to Wembley – here are the player ratings:
