Under-21s win title in dramatic fashion

Manchester United’s Under-21 s sealed a second consecutive title in typical fashion, after Guillermo Varela’s injury-time winner handed the Reds a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Joe Pritchard’s equaliser six minutes from the end looked to have put the champagne on ice for Warren Joyce’s men until the Uruguayan volleyed past Luke McGee in the fourth minute of injury time to spark wild celebrations amongst players, staff and a sizeable amount of away fans.

United had taken a two-goal lead early in the game, with Donald Love scoring the opener in the fifth minute after Andreas Pereira had rolled Paddy McNair’s ball into the Scotsman’s path. Pereira then added to the lead 10 minutes later, volleying home a wonderful cross from Varela.

Spurs soon pulled one back, with captain Will Miller putting the ball past Joel Pereira in the United goal after being given too much space, before Pritchard equalised after Marcus Edwards had been allowed to cross from the right-hand side.

It set up a grandstand finish with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Edwards and Joe Muscatt all missing chances for both sides before Varela’s contribution sealed a fifth Under-21 Premier League title in seven years for the Reds.
