Manchester United will be back at Wembley on May 21, after Anthony Martial’s goal in the last minute of stoppage time secured a heart-stopping 2-1 victory over Everton.
It was certainly a game of two halves for United, who deservedly took the lead through Marouane Fellaini in the first half and could have had several more had the likes of Jesse Lingard taken their chances in front of goal against an Everton side rattled by the directness of United.
And it would seem that those missed chances would come back to haunt United in the second half, as the Toffees came out a different side after the break. Romelu Lukaku had a chance to level from the penalty spot after Timothy Fosu-Mensah had been adjudged to have brought down Ross Barkley, but the Belgian’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by David de Gea.
But Everton got the goal that they deserved for their efforts – Gerard Deulofeu’s cross was deflected by Chris Smalling past De Gea and Roberto Martinez’s side were galvanised. A pulsating final ten minutes followed before Martial brought back memories of Fergie Time with a cool, composed finish, sending United fans into wild celebrations.
