Henrikh Mkhitaryan can make a big impact at Manchester United, according to his former Borussia Dortmund teammate Ilkay Gundogan.
United are hoping to conclude the signing of the 27-year-old Armenian international this week after the Bundesliga club announced the midfielder’s departure on Saturday.
And Gundogan, who completed a move to United’s crosstown rivals Manchester City last month, said that his former midfield partner in crime could make an massive impact for the Reds on the pitch, although he also warned that it could take him a while to settle in England.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the 25-year-old said:
He has been at Dortmund for three years. The first two years were not so easy for him, to be honest.
He’s a player who needs self-confidence, who needs to play every time and prove himself to get better and better. At this time, we were not so successful, so it was not easy for him to adapt. He had a few problems.
But when you see how he played last year, it was really incredible. Maybe he was the most important player for us last year. If he can go on like this, he will have a big, big impact for Manchester United, and a big plus. I wish him the best, and to stay healthy.
Mkhitaryan spent three seasons at Dortmund after joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2013 for a fee of €27.5 million and turned into one of the Bundesliga’s best playmakers under the management of Thomas Tuchel last season.
His performances for Dortmund saw him voted the Bundesliga Players’ Player of the Season after scoring 11 goals and assisting another 15 as his side finished second behind Bayern Munich in the table.
Those statistics are certainly encouraging and United fans will be hoping that he can reproduce that form under José Mourinho once the deal is officially done.
