Wigan 0-2 United: Four things we learned

Manchester United fans got to see the first glimpse of José Mourinho’s squad as they travelled to the DW Stadium to take on newly promoted Wigan Athletic.

New signings Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were involved from the off along with the much anticipated return of Luke Shaw after 10 months out with a broken leg.

The first half started in expected fashion as both teams were adapting to being on the pitch again, but United dominated the possession and Mkhitaryan was notably impressive darting through the middle and taking on players at will. The best chance of the first half was created by the Armenian international who drilled in a low-cross in which Memphis just skewed wide.

The second half saw a plethora of United changes with Jones, Mata, Januzaj, Pereira, Young, Valencia & Keane coming on for Fosu-Mensah, Shaw, Carrick, Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Memphis & Wilson.

United didn’t take long to really get going as a poor Jääskeläinen clearance was intercepted by Juan Mata and squared unselfishly for Will Keane to slot home for United’s first. It wasn’t long after when Andreas Pereira scored a stunning goal on a swivel from a set-piece to put United two goals up.

United saw out the game with ease with the defence barely being tested, but fans will be pleased to see glimpses of some of the new signings and youngsters and how the team might operate under Mourinho’s tenure.
