Darmian unlikely to leave United this summer

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian is unlikely to leave the Reds this summer, according to reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The 26-year-old full-back only recently returned to training after recovering from international duty with Italy at Euro 2016 and played 20 minutes in United’s 5-2 win over Galatasaray on Saturday.

However, after an average first season at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, there have been rumours that Darmian would be surplus to requirements under new manager José Mourinho, with Roma and Napoli reportedly interested in taking the former Torino man back to Italy.

However, Di Marzio has cleared up Darmian’s future in Manchester, saying that the defender is not for sale and that it would that a sizeable offer to even tempt United into selling the 26-year-old.

Darmian joined the Reds for £12.7 million last season, but after a very promising start in English football, regressed and lost his first-team position towards the back end of the season to Antonio Valencia. However, he still made 39 appearances in all competitions for United as they won the FA Cup.

Despite the rumours surrounding his future, Darmian will most likely be a valuable part of the side. He has all the attributes of a full-back that Mourinho likes and may have a role similar to that of Cesar Azpilicueta during the Portuguese manager’s second spell with Chelsea – a versatile full-back able to play at both right-back and left-back.
