Fellaini to reject Sunderland move

Marouane Fellaini will reject the opportunity of a reunion with David Moyes at Sunderland to fight for his place at Manchester United, according to The Independent.

Earlier today, Moyes confirmed in his first press conference as Sunderland manager that Fellaini was one of his main transfer targets, along with fellow United team-mate Adnan Januzaj.

However, despite the lure of regular first-team football at the Stadium of Light, the 28-year-old Belgian international wants to remain at Old Trafford after José Mourinho told the midfielder that he has a place for him in his side.

Fellaini has often been criticised by United fans since his £27.5 million move from Everton in the summer of 2013 – a move brokered by Moyes during his ill-fated spell as United manager.

But with Bastian Schweinsteiger reportedly on his way out at Old Trafford, Fellaini’s versatility and stature means that Mourinho values him as a potential game changer if needed off the bench or even starting games to counter certain opposition threats.

Fellaini was often used off the bench last season, either as a defensive midfielder, in the number ten role and even up top by former manager Louis van Gaal, making 34 appearances in all competitions as United won the FA Cup.
