Manchester United played out a goalless draw against Everton in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial match on Wednesday night.

The United captain was given a great reception by both sets of supporters, with travelling fans of his former side Everton even clapping the Croxteth-born striker when he took a corner in front of them in the first half.

A goalless first half was followed by an even duller second 45 minutes in which either side rarely looked like scoring.

Rooney enjoyed a night dedicated to his wonderful football career, though, as he combined with new teammates Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly at Old Trafford for the first time. Henrikh Mkhitaryan came off the bench after United’s number ten had already been brought off.

United will hope to improve ahead of their Community Shield clash against reigning Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday, with that being the club’s last game before the Premier League starts again the following weekend.

This was also Jose Mourinho’s first match in charge of United at Old Trafford as the Portuguese saluted the Old Trafford crowd in an otherwise relatively forgetful encounter. Here are our player ratings from the game:
