Manchester United have won the first silverware of the José Mourinho era after they beat Leicester City in the Community Shield.
The traditional curtain raiser to the season took place in glorious sunshine at Wembley and last season’s FA Cup winners took the lead midway through the half with a special goal – Jesse Lingard twisting and turning past four Leicester players before slotting the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.
But the Foxes hit back quickly in the second half – an errant backpass by Marouane Fellaini allowed Jamie Vardy to ghost through on goal, rounding David de Gea before slotting the ball into an empty net.
However, it would be Zlatan Ibrahimovic that would have the last laugh for United on his competitive Reds debut – nodding the ball past Schmeichel after meeting Antonio Valencia’s cross with seven minutes remaining.
It was a professional performance from United, who were threatened at times by Leicester’s pace on the break, but Ibrahimovic’s intervention ensured that Mourinho would walk away with his first piece of silverware as Manchester United boss.
