Done Deal: Januzaj joins Sunderland on loan

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj has joined fellow Premier League side Sunderland on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old Belgian international becomes the third United player to reunite with former manager David Moyes at the Stadium of Light after Paddy McNair and Donald Love completed their moves to the Black Cats yesterday.

Januzaj had been made surplus to requirements by new United manager José Mourinho after the Reds’ pre-season tour of China and was reportedly unhappy at the decision – refusing to change in the Under-23 dressing room at Carrington in protest.

This move represents make or break for Januzaj’s career at Old Trafford, with his development having stalled after a spectacular debut season under Moyes’ management, with the winger being one of the bright lights of the Scotsman’s terrible spell with United.

The move to Wearside will also bring back great memories for the Belgian, having scored a brace to help United beat Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light on his first senior Reds start.

Last season, Januzaj chose to go on loan to Borussia Dortmund in August after featuring in United’s first couple of matches, but was unable to break into Thomas Tuchel’s side during his disastrous six-month spell in Germany, failing to start a single Bundesliga match in the process.

The loan was eventually cancelled in January and the winger returned to Manchester, but reports of attitude problems and showboating in an Under-21 match saw him fall on former manager Louis van Gaal’s bad side and he barely made an appearance in the second half of the season, instead turning out for the Under-21s on a regular basis as they retained their Premier League title.

Januzaj will be available for Moyes to select when the Black Cats face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in their first Premier League match of the season tomorrow.
