Manchester United got their Premier League season off to the best possible start after a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth at Dean Court today.
José Mourinho retained his record of not ever losing a Premier League game on opening day in his first league match in charge of United, as goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic put the Reds at the top of the table on goal difference.
Adam Smith’s consolation goal would prove to be the only bright spot for Eddie Howe’s men, as they struggled to break down a strong United defence, led once again by the excellent Eric Bailly.

After the game, Ibrahimovic and captain Rooney spoke to Sky Sports and the Swedish striker said he was pleased with his debut goal:
I tried to do my job and help my team.
The first objective is to win, and the second is to score so that’s good. For me, the victory is the most important thing and whoever scores, it is a bonus.
First half we weren’t on 100 per cent but second half it became more easier, more space and we could play more our game, then we scored the second and third one. It was a good game, a good start. It’s important to start good.

Rooney echoed Ibrahimovic’s words, stating that the Reds had made a statement with the three points today:
It’s always important to win your first game. There’s a lot of positives to take from the game.
Getting the three goals and the three points was the most important thing. I think we’ve got off to a good start.
There’s a lot of excitement. Not just from ourselves but from the fans and we can sense that.
