The most eagerly anticipated Manchester Derby in years saw Manchester City take the spoils at Old Trafford, as they beat United 2-1 in a pulsating clash.
José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola led their teams out onto the field at the Theatre of Dreams to start the next chapter of their heated rivalry and Mourinho’s men did not get off to the greatest of the starts, with some players clearly overawed by the occasion.
And the Citizens duly took the lead in the 14th minute, with Daley Blind failing to cut out Kelechi Iheanacho’s flick on, allowing Kevin de Bruyne to race through on goal to slot past David de Gea. It would be two just past the half hour mark, as Iheanacho put away a rebound after De Bruyne’s shot hit the left-hand post.
However, United found their way back into the game, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic nonchalantly volleying home after City’s new signing Claudio Bravo had spilled the ball while trying to claim it from a free-kick.
Despite making two changes at half-time and putting in an improved performance, United were unable to find an equaliser as City escaped with all three points, although it could have been different had a clear studs-up tackle by Bravo on Wayne Rooney in the box been given by referee Mark Clattenburg.
