Current United squad is most expensive in history

The current Manchester United side is the most expensively assembled team in history, according to a report by the CIES Football Observatory, ahead of the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

The report indicates that Paul Pogba’s signing for a world-record transfer fee of £89 million has pushed the value of this United side to over £600 million, which comes after former manager Louis van Gaal spent £250 million to revitalise a flagging Reds side which floundered after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The likes of Angel di Maria, Anthony Martial, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw came in for big sums during the Dutchman’s two-season reign at Old Trafford, with new manager José Mourinho also being given money to spend as he took charge at the Theatre of Dreams earlier in the summer.

Alongside Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly also made their way to Manchester – with the former on a free transfer, while the latter two joined for hefty fees.

Money doesn’t always buy trophies in football, but United will be hoping that their investment in the playing squad pays off in the long run as they look to make their way back to the top of English and European football after what can be described as a lean spell after the dominance of the Ferguson era.
