Fosu-Mensah signs new long-term United deal

Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has signed a new deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2020.

The contract includes a clause to extend it by a further year, should the promising Dutch under-21 international decide to prolong his stay in Manchester.

Fosu-Mensah joined United from Ajax back in 2014 and has quickly progressed through the youth ranks at the Theatre of Dreams. Having impressed with his performances at Under-18 and Under-21 level last season, the 18-year-old was handed his United debut by Louis van Gaal in the Reds’ 3-2 victory over Arsenal in February.

He then went on to make a further nine appearances for United, including an FA Cup semi-final clash against Everton as Van Gaal placed his faith in youth towards the end of the season. This season, he has made two appearances for United, starting for United in the EFL Cup third round tie against Northampton Town and a Europa League group game against Zorya Luhansk.

Despite a lack of playing time so far, this contract extension is a sign that United manager José Mourinho highly values the talents of Fosu-Mensah, with the young Dutchman having seemingly usurped Matteo Darmian as Antonio Valencia’s backup at right-back.

In a statement on the official Manchester United website, Fosu-Mensah said:

I am delighted to have signed a new contract here at Manchester United. I have enjoyed every minute since I joined this great club and I want to continue the progress that I feel I have made so far. I am learning every day from the manager and the coaching staff. I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch.
