United striker to undergo surgery for knee injury

Manchester United striker James Wilson will undergo surgery after tearing the cruciate ligament in his knee while on loan with Championship side Derby County.

The 20-year-old had returned to United for a scan after injuring it in a training session on Monday and the results do not look good for the young striker, who now faces an extended period on the sidelines.

It is another setback for Wilson, who has been usurped in the strikers’ pecking order at Old Trafford by the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial since making his senior debut for the Reds back in June 2014.

The Biddulph-born striker has only made four appearances for the Rams since arriving at the iPro Stadium on loan this season, with three starts and one appearance off the bench.

He scored in one of those starts as Derby drew 2-2 with Doncaster Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy earlier this month, but this injury may well have ended his season prematurely.

United reserves manager Warren Joyce commented on Wilson’s injury, saying that it was harsh luck for the 20-year-old:

It’s a great disappointment for him and for the club as well. He’s got to look to work his socks off and come back in the best shape he’s ever been in his life. All you can do when you have setbacks is to try to be positive and look to make sure when you do return, it’s in the best shape.
